📌 What is Melanotan 1?
Melanotan 1 (also known as Afamelanotide) is a synthetic analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It promotes skin tanning and provides protection against UV damage by stimulating melanin production in the skin. Unlike Melanotan 2, it does not significantly affect libido and is primarily used for photoprotection.
💡 Main Uses of Melanotan 1
| Use | How It Helps |
|---|---|
| 🌞 Skin Tanning & Pigmentation | Promotes a natural tan without excessive UV exposure |
| 🛡️ UV Protection | Increases melanin to help protect against sunburn and UV-related skin damage |
| 🩹 Treatment of Skin Disorders | FDA- and EMA-approved (as Afamelanotide, Scenesse®) for erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a rare condition causing extreme sensitivity to sunlight |
| ⚡ Potential Cosmetic Use | Investigated for reducing sun damage and improving skin tone consistency |
⚙️ How It Works
Binds to melanocortin-1 receptors (MC1R) in skin cells

Provides both cosmetic tanning and medical photoprotection
